The association between periodontitis and acute myocardial infarction

PI: Dr. Philippe Hujoel, D.D.S., Ph.D., Assistant Professor Dental Public Health Sciences, School of Dentistry, University of Washington

The aims of this study are to use the NHANES l longitudinal follow-up cohort data to compare the myocardial infarct (MI) risk among edentulous individuals to comparable individuals with periodontitis using a Cox proportional hazards model. We will also determine whether the risk for MI among edentulous individuals varies as a function of time since loss of all of their teeth when compared to individuals with periodontitis. Risk change over time will be evaluated by assessing the proportional hazards assumption.

This study has been approved and funded by RCDRC but it has not yet begun.
