Admission to UW College/School

Background Information on Proficiency Requirements
In autumn quarter, 1985, the current composition, writing, and QSR requirements replaced the University's existing proficiency requirements.  (In A&S and SOC WF, foreign language proficiency was first required in AU85.)  See the entry in the in the AIF for details.  Students may use those requirements if they began college anywhere before AU85.

Since DARS doesn't know the student's first quarter, it uses the requirements in effect when the student entered UW.  If the student began college
elsewhere before AU85, you must take action to apply the older requirements.

How to Apply Pre-1985 Proficiency Requirements
Note: This may not be possible in a very few non-A&S majors.  Write dars@u.washington.edu
for help if the process fails.
  On EARS
    1)  In the exceptions drop-down menu, select:

"Allow student to use pre-1985 proficiency requirements."

    2)  The student's first quarter at UW will display as the "default," along with a field labeled
"Override."  Enter the actual QTR/YEAR (or SEM/YEAR) in which the student first entered college.
    3)  Run a new audit.  The old proficiency requirements will appear above the Areas of Knowledge.

On the SDB
    1)  On the 391 screen, in the second line below the student's name, the student's first quarter
at UW will display as the "default," along with a field labeled "Override."
First quarter at any college: AUT/2004 OVERRIDE: ___/____
NOTE: Default is first quarter at the UW.
Enter the actual QTR/YEAR (or SEM/YEAR) in which the student first entered college.
    2)  Send.
    3)  Transfer back to the 390 screen.
    4)  Run a new audit. The old proficiency requirements will appear above the Areas of Knowledge.

Major and Minor Requirements:  How to Apply a Different Set
DARS automatically uses the requirements that were in effect when the student declared the major or minor.  You may want to allow the student to follow a newer or older set of requirements.

Note: If the student is being allowed to graduate under requirements that predate DARS, and if it does not appear that you can make DARS reflect those requirements with a reasonable number of exceptions, please contanct Tina Miller in GARS, millert@u.washington.edu.
  On EARS
    1)  In the exceptions drop-down menu, select:

"Override student's quarter of admission into the major."
    2)  The student's actual entry quarter will display, with a field labeled "Override" in which to enter
the QTR/YEAR you want to use.  (If the student has more than one major or minor, a field
       is provided for each.)
    3)  Run a new audit. The PGM ENTRY QTR on the audit (third line below the student's name)
is now the QTR/YEAR your entered, and the requirements in effect that quarter now apply.

On the SDB
    1)  On the 391 screen, use the last field on the appropriate line at the bottom.  Enter the
QTR/YEAR you want to use opposite the current:
         Major 1st declared: AUT/2005 (e.g.)
   Minor 1st declared: WIN/2006
OVERRIDE: SPR/2006 (e.g.)
OVERRIDE: ___/____
    2)  Send.
    3)  Transfer back to the 390 screen.
    4)  Run a new audit.  The PGM ENTRY QTR on the audit (third line below the student's name) is
now the QTR/YEAR you entered, and the requirements in effect that quarter now apply.

NOTE: The following section on the 391 screen is used only by the Business School:

     First quarter at school/college: AUT/2004           OVERRIDE: ___/____
                for school/college code: C   ARTS & SCI     OVERRIDE: _
