English Language RequirementsThe University of Washington requires all students who are not US citizens to demonstrate English language proficiency. Students may demonstrate English proficiency by submitting minimum test scores or by completing mandatory English language requirement course work through the UW's Academic English Program (AEP). The requirement applies to both undergraduate students and graduate students. Minimum Test ScoresAny one of the following test scores may be presented as proof of English proficiency. Students submitting minimum scores before enrolling as a degree-seeking student are considered to have met the English proficiency requirement. Minimum scores submitted after students are enrolled will exempt them from future AEP course requirements.
Mandatory Course WorkStudents with an English language proficiency requirement must register for at least one AEP course every quarter they register for courses at the University of Washington. Students must register for their AEP course before registering for any other courses. The Academic English Program (AEP) website provides detailed information on AEP courses and placement exams. Delays in Mandatory AEP CoursesUndergraduates may receive one quarter delay in AEP course work if there is compelling academic reason. Requests must be received in writing and approved by an adviser. Graduate students: all requests to delay required English language requirement courses must be made in writing by your departmental program coordinator. The request must contain an explanation of your specific situation, your student number, and your department phone number. Address the request to: Dean Elizabeth Feetham, Graduate School, Box 353770, or email Marilyn Gray at megray@u.washington.edu A response will be forwarded to your department in about a week. Please be certain that requests are submitted early enough to allow for a decision prior to registration. Requests will not be accepted after the 5th day of the quarter. |
