Justus F. Lehmann Day Symposium
Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Chair, 1957 – 1986.
In 1957, Justus F. Lehmann, M.D., was appointed to be the first chair of the University of Washington’s new Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, charged to develop comprehensive research, training, and clinical care programs in medical rehabilitation at the UW.
From 1957 to 1986, Dr. Lehmann did just that, developing and overseeing a department focused on all aspects of the rehabilitation process: training medical students, physiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and prostheticists/orthotists; creating multidisciplinary clinical teams; and conducting major studies in all major aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
In honor of Dr. Lehmann’s outstanding leadership and in recognition of his tireless work in the field
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the UW Department
of Rehabilitation Medicine sponsors an annual symposium, held during the first weekend of June, for residents, graduate students, and practitioners in the field.
