Physical Therapy Profession and Degree Program
Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)
Financing
Tuition and Other Major Program Expenses
Tuition for DPT students during the academic year 2008-2009 is set at $3,977 for residents and $7,798 per quarter for non-residents (and can be expected to increase 8% per year). Allow approximately $2,000 total for textbooks. There is also a one-time mandatory immunization/insurance charge of $275. Off campus housing typically runs $700/month for a one bedroom apartment; $600/month will provide food and entertainment; the $45+ per quarter student U-Pass may cover all local transportation needs. Students who are assigned to out-of town clinical internships should be prepared to meet additional travel and housing expenses ($3,000).
Using the figures in the preceding paragraph, a reaonable estimate of total program expenses (11 consecutive quarters = 33 months) for a single person (living in Seattle and a Washington resident) would be:
$ 48,000 tuition
$ 2,400 fees
$ 24,000 housing
$ 20,000 food and entertainment |
$ 2,000 books/copies
$ 3,000 internship expenses
$ 550 transportation
$ 275 immunization/insurance |
Housing and food costs may be reduced via shared or University housing options. Contact Housing and Food Services (206-543-4059) or the Off-Campus Rental Listing Service (206-543-8997) for more details.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
Information on financial assistance and scholarships may be obtained from the UW Office of Financial Aid (206-543-6101). [http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/] Students should apply for all types of financial aid as soon as possible after January prior to potential admission to the program. (Deadlines: February 28/March 1 for financial aid and end of May for childcare assistance; January-April for private scholarships). Most students arrange for student loans if they need financial assistance, as there is little time available for employment while enrolled in the program.
Residents of Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming may wish to investigate a special tuition supplement available through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Professional Student Exchange Program. This program may provide funds for certified students to compensate for most of the difference between resident and non-resident tuition. Contact (303-541-0214) for further details or visit http://www.wiche.edu/sep/PSEP/.
Information on the Child Care Assistance program may be obtained at 206-543-1041 or their website at http://depts.washington.edu/ovpsa/childcare/.
PT Fellowship
Finally, there is a PT fellowship that will be awarded each year to a new incoming student with high scholastic merit and financial need. The fellowship will be funded through the Division of Physical Therapy and will cover a portion of tuition expenses. The fellowship recipient will be selected in the spring before the program begins each fall. Once a fellowship has been awarded the recipient will have the option of continuing the funding through each program year (up to 3 years), contingent on scholastic achievement. A fellowship application is available via this link: fellowship application.
