Research Programs
Research is an important part of the mission of the Department
of Rehabilitation Medicine. We have numerous research grants
from multiple sources and are annually ranked among the top
two rehabilitation medicine departments in funding from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our research covers a
wide range - from the applied to the basic - and has contributed
to a better understanding of the factors that lead to disability,
new treatments, and a better understanding of the rehabilitation
process.
Research training is a major emphasis within the department including pre & post doctoral training in Rehabilitation Sciences and post-doctoral fellowships in EMG, SCI, MS, Clinical Psychology and Advanced Rehabilitation Research.
We have six federally funded centers including Model Systems
for Traumatic Brain Injury,
Spinal Cord Injury, Burns,
and a Research and Training
Center for Multiple Sclerosis, all funded by the National
Institute for Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the Department
of Education and Program Project
in Chronic Pain Management and Outcomes Research in Rehabilitation (UWCORR), both funded by NIH.
Special research facilities are available for motion analysis, neuropsychological testing, spasticity measurements, and exercise studies.
