Studies Seeking Volunteers
Several of our research studies are currently seeking volunteers.
If you would like to participate in, or learn more about
one of the projects listed below, please contact the person
listed for that project.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Pain Management Study
A Study on the Management of Pain for Persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Researchers in the department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington are seeking study participants who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in a project investigating treatment for chronic pain.
This research study is intended to investigate if treatments that include self-hypnosis training, provide education about chronic pain, and focus on how to change how a person thinks about his/her pain can benefit persons with MS who have chronic pain. If the treatment you receive is effective for you, you may experience a decrease in your daily pain. As a result, pain may interfere less with your daily activities.
This study involves participation in 16 face-to-face sessions of treatment and periodic telephone interviews over the course of 4-6 months. Treatment sessions will take place either at the University of Washington Medical Center, the Harborview Medical Center or at your home, depending on your availability and the availability of the investigators. Compensation for parking will be provided.
To participate in this study you must have a MS diagnosis (confirmed by a physician), be at least 18 years of age, have moderate to severe chronic pain, and meet other study criteria.
For more information please contact the Management of Pain in Persons with MS Study staff at 206-616-9058 or 1-800-377-9707.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Stroke Studies
A Study on the
Effect of Robotic-Assisted Exercise for Veterans who Experience Arm Weakness Following a Stroke
Veterans who have had a stroke are needed for a VA Cooperative Studies funded research study using robotic-assisted exercise. Recent studies of people with arm weakness after stroke have begun to find that intensive therapy can lead to significant improvements even among people who had the stroke in the past. Veterans may be eligible if they had a stroke at least 6 months ago and the stroke affected their ability to use their arm or hand. For more information or to refer someone please call 206-277-3460.
A Study on the
Effect of Exercise on the Mood and Quality of Life for those
with Concussions or TBI
Researchers in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine
at the University of Washington Medical Center are seeking
people who have had concussions or head injuries (also known
as traumatic brain injury or TBI) to participate in a federally
funded research study about the effect of exercise on mood
and quality of life.
- Have you had a head injury in the last five years,
- also known as concussion or traumatic brain injury?
- Are you unsatisfied with your current mood? This could
include problems with depression, sadness, sleeping,
appetite, lack of interest, anxiety or irritability.
- Would you like to take part in a study to see if exercise
helps to improve mood and to lessen problems that go
along with a depressed or irritable mood?
- All participants will have a chance to participate
in a free 10-week supervised exercise program that will
be held weekly at North Seattle Community College Wellness
Center.
If you are between the ages of 16 and 70, had a head
injury between 6 months and 5 years ago, are concerned or dissatisfied
with your current mood, or have a diagnosis of depression,
and are interested in learning more about our study, please call Nadya at 206-685-8354.
