The University of Washington Department of Rehabilitation Medicine
Residency Training Program is approved by the ACGME. Applicants
for the PGY-1 positions for 2007 and PGY-2 positions for 2008
will apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service
(ERAS). Applicants are selected through the National Resident
Matching Program only. You may use one application to apply
for both positions.
U.S. and Canadian Graduates
Contact your medical school Dean's office for information
about The Electronic Residency Application Service, or contact
ERAS directly or via e-mail at eras@aamc.org.
Foreign Medical Graduates
For positions through the National Residency Matching Program,
the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Residency Training
Program requires that all foreign medical graduates successfully
complete one year of internship in an ACGME accredited U.S.
program or at least 12 months of clerkships at an LCME accredited
U.S. medical school. Applications will only be accepted through
ERAS, and ECFMG will serve as your Dean's office. For more
information, contact ECFMG-ERAS Program, P.O. Box 13467, Philadelphia,
PA 19104-3467, U.S.A, or go to their website ECFMG-ERAS
Support for International Medical Students and Graduates.
Outside of Match Positions
We currently are not filling any positions outside of the
Match.
Application Procedures for PGY-1 (2008) and PGY-2 (2009)
positions
For these positions, we only accept applications through
the ERAS system.
Categorical vs Advanced Positions:
When applying thru ERAS, applicants will be asked to choose
the Categorical track or the Advanced track. The categorical
positions begin with our program as a pgy-1. The advanced
positions begin with our program the following year as a pgy-2,
after completing a transitional year in Medicine at another
institution. The advantages to either track will be explained
on the interview day. In selecting applicants for interviews,
we do not distingish between those choosing one track or another,
all interviews will be the same. In other words, it does not
matter which track you choose when applying, you can make
your final decision about which track you prefer after the
interview, when completing your rank list on the NMRP.
The following items are required as part of your application
and should be sent via ERAS:
- ERAS Common Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae
The ERAS program will generate a CV for us based on the
information you provide in the Common Application Form.
You do not need to submit a separate CV.
- Personal Statement
Please submit a brief narrative statement discussing your
interest in the field of physiatry
and your ultimate professional objectives. Are you interested
in an academic career (teaching and research), private practice,
administration, or other areas? What exposure have you had
to the physiatric care of persons with disabilities, musculoskeletal
injuries, or functional impairments?
- Medical School Transcript
- Dean's Letter
- USMLE Scores
- Letters of Recommendation
Request at least three letters of recommendation from members
of the faculty or professional staff of your medical school
or hospitals where you have worked. Additional recommendations
may be added. These should be included in your ERAS application.
A letter from a physiatrist is strongly encouraged.
All application materials should be sent though
the ERAS system.
We prefer to have all application material at
the time your Dean's letter is transmitted (November 1). However,
material will be accepted until November 30.
Interview Process
- Our selection committee will begin reviewing applications
in October and November. An invitation to interview can be extended
only after we have received a complete application. After
reviewing these materials, we will let you know via email
whether or not you are to be invited to visit our program
and have an interview. We will extend an invitation to interview
to approximately 75 applicants at the beginning of November.
- Since there is a limit to the number of invited applicants
we can accommodate on any given day, you should let us know,
as soon as possible after receiving your invitation, the
date(s) on which you are available to come to Seattle. Please
consider coming in November or December since the January dates are
always more crowded. Interviews will be scheduled on Fridays.
Questions regarding the application and/or interview process
may be directed to Karen Ennes.
