Welcome to the University of Washington
PM&R applicant website. We have created this website
to introduce you to our training program in physical medicine
and rehabilitation. Our UW Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation training program is among the top
PM&R residency programs in the United States. Our UW Department
of Rehabilitation Medicine is consistently ranked in the top
3 by US News and World Report.
What are some of the strengths of our program that make it
among the best?
- A large patient population and multiple training
sites to see PM&R practiced in a variety of settings.
- The leadership of our Chairman, Dr. Peter Esselman,
and his commitment to resident education.
- Our program director, Dr. Terry Massagli, is a highly respected physician and educator. Dr. Massagli sits on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and will serve on the PM&R Residency Review Committee for ACGME beginning July 2008. In 2005, she received the prestigious Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award from the ACGME. In 2007, she received the Outstanding Service Award from the Association of Academic Physiatrists.
- The quality of the rehab faculty. The University
of Washington attracts some of the top physiatrists from
around the country.
- Faculty advising system for residents. Each resident
is assigned an advisor to assist them with career guidance,
feedback, and mentoring
- Some of the best and brightest residents in PM&R.
Our residents have diverse backgrounds from allopathic and
osteopathic schools and some with prior training in other
fields including Internal Medicine and Surgery.
Applicants sometimes question the amount of time spent on
the inpatient services during residency training. It is a
requirement that residents spend one third of their training
in inpatient work but no more than 18 months. Our residents
average 13 months of inpatient time, 6.5 months providing
consultative care, 12 months caring for outpatients, and 4.5
months on EMGs.
The didactic program is structured to cover all the pertinent
basic sciences and clinical applications. Opportunities for
research abound for the interested resident. Our residents
do extremely well on the training
exams and Boards, and are highly competitive for fellowship
positions and clinical practice jobs.
All this, and you get to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
We have a mild climate that allows outdoor activities year
round (it really doesn't rain as much as they say!).
Whether you love city life or the great outdoors, Seattle
has lots of affordable recreation and cultural events.
