This table contains codes which are used to describe a person's racial and ethnic orientation. Each person in the Student Database has two of these codes assigned to him or her. One code is assigned to represent a student's ethnicity, a second code is assigned to indicate hispanicity. The columns "Valid Ethnic" and "Valid Hispanic" indicate whether that code can legitimately be assigned as an Ethnic-Code or a Hispanic-Code. (For example, code 722 - MEXICAN MEX/CHICANO, can be legitimately assigned to the Hispanic-Code field since the Valid Hispanic field contains a 1 [which translates into True], while it cannot be assigned to a student's Ethnic-Code field since the Valid Ethnic value is 0 [which translates into False]). Each code is related to several other characteristics as well. There is a long and short description for each code. The Ethnic Group contains the possible values of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 which represent the larger census ethnic groups:
- 1 - African American
- 2 - American Indian
- 3 - Caucasian
- 4 - Hispanic
- 5 - Asian American
- 6 - Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
- 7 - Other
Lastly, the field Underrepresented is assigned to ethnic groups based on their level of representation. Underrepresented groups are assigned the value 9 and represented groups are assigned 0.
