Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists 2014

Limited Submissions

The Blavatnik Family Foundation and the New York Academy of Sciences announce the national expansion of the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists competition. Effective 2014, the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists will be open to faculty-rank scientists across the United States age 42 or under. The expanded National program will be comprised of three overarching disciplinary categories: Physical Sciences and Engineering; Chemistry; and Life Sciences. Every year, one winner in each category will be awarded $250,000 in unrestricted funds. The Blavatnik Awards provides young, extraordinary scientists with the funding and recognition to carry out scientific work essential to address society's current and future challenges.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the national faculty competition, candidates must:

  • Have been born in or after 1972.
  • Have earned a doctorate degree (PhD, DPhil, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.).
  • Be currently holding a faculty research position at an eligible academic institution in the United States.
  • Have made significant contributions to the Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and/or Chemistry.

 

Candidates may be nominated once per year, for an unlimited number of years, until they are named a winner or they no longer meet the eligibility requirements. Faculty winners of the previous regional competition are no longer eligible to compete in the national faculty competition. Faculty finalists, postdoctoral finalists, and postdoctoral winners of the regional competition are allowed to compete in the national faculty competition, provided that they meet the eligibility requirements listed above.

 

The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists especially encourages nominations on behalf of women and other underrepresented demographics of talented scientists and engineers. Please Note: Work completed as part of the candidate's doctoral training will not be evaluated.

Application Instructions

Please submit a two-page pre-nomination that summarizes the qualtity impact and novelty of the nominee're research, the disciplinary category of the nominee, a  Biosketch of the nominee, and a letter of support from the Dean or Chair to research@uw.eduby 5:00 PM Thursday, September 12, 2013. This letter of support signifies that the Dean or Chair have ensured that the nominee and application are likely to be of sufficient quality to be competitive nationally.
