Innovative / Translational Cancer Research

The Mary Kay Foundation was created in 1996, and its mission is two-fold: to fund research of cancers affecting women and to help prevent domestic violence while raising awareness of the issue. Since the Foundation’s inception, it has awarded $34 million to shelters and programs addressing domestic violence prevention and more than $20 million to cancer researchers and related causes throughout the United States. More than 97% of each donated dollar goes to the missions.

The Mary Kay Foundation is a non-profit public foundation which focuses on funding research for innovative grants for translational research in ovarian, uterine, breast or cervical cancer.  Translational research is broadly defined as research that will provide a scientific link between laboratory research and the clinic.  Ultimately, such research would lead to improvement in diagnosis, prognosis, prevention or treatment of cancer.  The Foundation is pleased to invite your institution to submit one grant proposal.

Your grant proposal will be reviewed by a Scientific Research Review Committee.  The Research Review Committee is composed of noted members of the American medical and scientific community.  It is our hope that you will identify and encourage the appropriate person within your Institution to complete the application.  Only one grant application will be accepted from each accredited school.  The grant will be up to $100,000 (combined direct and indirect costs) for a two-year period.  If indirect costs are requested, they cannot exceed 15 percent.  If selected, the funds will be paid in two payments.  The first payment will be after receipt of the executed contract.  The second payment will be mailed following receipt of the first year status report.  The Foundation anticipates funding between ten and fifteen grants.

Once the grant application and related information has been completed, the original and electronic copy in a PDF file format must be received no later than 5 p.m., CST, Monday, February 3, 2014. 

Application Instructions

Please submit a two-page letter of intent with a list of all anticipated investigators, description of proposed aims and approach, Biosketch of the PI, and a letter of support from the Dean or Chair to research@uw.edu by 5:00 PM Thursday, December 12, 2013. This letter of support signifies that the Dean or Chair have ensured that the nominee and application are likely to be of sufficient quality to be competitive nationally. Full proposals are due to the sponsor on 2/3/14, so you will need to have your materials in to the Office of Sponsored Programs by 1/27/14 for processing, if given the go ahead by the Proposal Review Committee.
