2014 Medical Funds
The Seattle Foundation administers the Medical Funds program to support medical research of potential benefit to the community and to address specific healthcare needs.
- A total amount of $200,000 is available for grants annually.
- Typically no more than $50,000 is disbursed to any one organization.
- Applications and all required materials must be sent via email AND postal mail (postmarked) on or before October 1, 2014.
- Final determination of awards and notification of recipients will be made by The Seattle Foundation Board of Trustees by December 31, 2014.
- A full report of how the funds were used is due within 12 months of receipt of the grant. Any funds not used for the purpose specified should be returned to The Seattle Foundation.
Each year the Foundation distributes approximately $250,000 in grants to local organizations or institutions through the eight Medical Funds. The Foundation relies on a small group of researchers and community-based physicians to provide peer review of the applications and make funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees. Due to the variety of scientific questions being addressed and medical equipment being requested, Foundation staff looks to the committee for their expertise and advice as to which applications are of strong scientific merit in an effort to best meet the intent of the donors.
Two types of grant funds are available to organizations/institutions through the Medical Funds program:
Medical Research Projects
Grants are available in the fields of cancer, cardio-pulmonary disease, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Special consideration will be given to research projects related to immunology, oncology, neurology, molecular biology and genetics.
- Grants will be given to requests for specific equipment.
- Preference will be given to organizations/institutions with the capacity to disseminate research findings and who receive regular support from other recognized funding sources (including the federal government).
- These funds are not to be used for patient care. Research activities can include patient care, but the primary purpose of these grants is to support the purchase of equipment used in medical research.
- Highest priority will be given to equipment requests that benefit multiple investigators.
Projects Addressing the Healthcare Needs of Low-Income Children
Grants are also available to organizations that are administering projects addressing the healthcare needs of low-income children. Grants will be given to requests for specific equipment and support for capital campaigns or facility renovation projects.

Inquiries and Contact Information
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
