Pew-Stewart 2017 Scholars Program for Cancer Research

Note: This opportunity requires an Office of Research pre-proposal review, from which we send on candidates to the Fred Hutch for final decisions.

The Pew-Stewart Scholars Program for Cancer Research is a national initiative designed to support promising early career scientists whose research will accelerate discovery and advance progress to a cure for cancer. The program—funded by The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust and administered by Pew—will support five investigators each year. The Stewart Trust has invested in innovative, cutting edge cancer research and scientists for over 15 years. Through this partnership, The Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research have tremendous potential to solve some of cancer’s weightiest challenges. The announcement from Fred Hutch is available by request to research@uw.edu

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility:

  • Nominees must have been awarded a doctorate in a field related to biomedical sciences or medicine.
  • As of November 1, 2016, nominees must hold full-time appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor or the equivalent. (Appointments such as Research Assistant Professor, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor Research Track, Visiting Professor or instructor are not eligible.)
  • On July 15, 2016, candidates must have bene in such an appointment for less than three years (not appointed before July 15, 2013), whether or not such an appointment was on a tenure track.
  • Candidates may be nominated by their institution only twice.
  • Funding from the NIH, other government sources, and project grants from non-profit associations do not pose a conflict with the Pew-Stewart Scholars Program.

Funding:

  • $240,000 over four years ($60,000 per year) in flexible support.
  • Funding for the second, third and fourth years is contingent upon timely submission of acceptable financial and narrative progress reports and attendance at the annual meeting in March (for which all travel expenses are paid by The Pew Trusts) during the four-year term.
  • The funds may be used at the discretion of the Pew-Stewart scholar for personnel, equipment, supplies, or travel directly related to the Scholar’s research and as to best advance his or her cancer research and career.
  • Not more than $10,000 of the annual award may be used for the Scholar’s salary (including benefits).
  • Should the funds not be immediately required, they may be accumulated (up to a maximum of $100,000 in any given year) and carried over through the four years of the grant period, and, with written approval of the program office, the grant may be extended for one additional (fifth) year (without additional funds).
  • It is expected that Pew-Stewart Scholars will spend at least 80% of their time in work related to the accomplishment of their overall research goals. However, Pew provides flexible support to the overall research aims of the Scholar and does not monitor or restrict percentage of effort or time of Pew-Stewart scholars.
  • Not more than 8% of the total award may be allocated for overhead costs, and this is not listed on the Exhibit A. An endorsed Fred Hutch nominee must have Division or Fred Hutch Director’s Office approval for unrecovered F&A costs prior to submitting an application to the Foundation. Nominees should work with their Division Administrator to complete this task. For further information please see the Fred Hutch Foregone

Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
