Undergraduate Education Program December 2017 Cycle

The W.M. Keck Foundation’s Undergraduate Education Program promotes distinctive learning and research experiences in science, engineering and the liberal arts at four year undergraduate colleges only in Foundation designated states, or through national organizations that address undergraduate needs. Public institutions and research universities located in the designated states may apply but must demonstrate a compelling or unique resource to be competitive.

Program Priorities:

  • Foster new levels of student engagement and understanding, especially through active learning and collaborative curriculum development
  • Expand interdisciplinary activities in balance with needs of each discipline
  • Incorporate research activities into the curriculum and raise the bar of expectations regarding publications and presentations by undergraduates
  • Enhance science and technology literacy for students in all disciplines
  • Develop new ways to stimulate critical thinking and other core competencies of a liberal arts education

Grant abstracts available on the Keck site provide insight into the types of institutions typically funded through this program.

Application Instructions

Please submit the following to research@uw.edu by 5:00 PM Tuesday, December 27, 2016

1.       A one-page concept paper with a description of proposed aims and approach (see below)

2.       Biosketch or CV of the PIs

Please prepare your concept paper according to the Keck Foundation’s instructions:

A single page, in 12 point font with 1 inch margins to include:

§  an overview of the proposed project, emphasizing how it will promote distinctive learning and research experiences in science, engineering and the liberal arts.

§  a description of the implementation plan and key personnel with disciplinary affiliation or expertise;

§  a brief justification of the need for Keck support, and

o    an estimated budget broken down, if possible, by major areas, e.g., personnel, equipment, consumable supplies, etc. (budgets can be rough approximations at this stage)

If there’s room, the authors are free to add other details (e.g., background to put the project into perspective, description of the institution’s prominence in the field, etc.). Avoid illustrations in these single-pagers – the researchers will need all the room for text. If a reference is necessary, abbreviate it as (Science, 323, 45, ‘11). DO NOT USE (Jones et al., 2011).

Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
