Fellowships for Science and Engineering Program

https://www.packard.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/2018-Packard-Fellows-Guidelines.pdf

The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering program invests in future leaders, giving them the freedom to take risks, explore new frontiers in their fields of study, and follow uncharted paths that may lead to groundbreaking discoveries.

Candidates must be faculty members who are eligible to serve as principal investigators engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering and must be within the first three years of their faculty careers. Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.

The Fellowship Program provides support for highly creative researchers early in their careers; faculty members who are well established and well-funded are less likely to receive the award. Packard Fellows are inquisitive, passionate scientists and engineers who take a creative approach to their research, dare to think big, and follow new ideas wherever they lead.

The Foundation emphasizes support for innovative individual research that involves the Fellows, their students, and junior colleagues, rather than extensions or components of large-scale, ongoing research programs.

Recognizing that certain areas of contemporary science and engineering already have access to relatively generous funding (for example, clinical research, research associated with the design and construction of large national facilities such as accelerators and space stations, and applied research of direct relevance to national security), the Packard Fellowships are directed to other, less generously supported fields.

Eligibility Requirements

Open to:  Physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in the social sciences will not be considered. Candidates must be faculty members in the first three years of their faculty careers, that is, whose initial faculty appointments began no earlier than May 31, 2015, and no later than May 31, 2018.

Application Instructions

Please send:

2.    CV

3.    A list of three proposed references: note that it is important to identify prominent references for this list, and that they do not necessarily need to be a mentor

Via email to: research@uw.edu by Thursday, February 15, 2018. If more than one nomination is submitted from the school/college, a priority order from the Dean’s office would be helpful. Nominations will be reviewed by the Limited Submissions Review Committee. You and the nominees will be informed of those selected for submission by 3/9/18. The nominations are due to the Foundation no later than 3/15/18 and will be submitted by the Office of the President, through the Office of Research.

If selected for submission, a final nomination will be due in the Office of Sponsored Programs by 4/12/18. Completed nominations must be submitted online by 4/20/18. Please note that three letters of recommendation from scientists outside the university must be received by the Foundation independent of the package prepared by the university. Letters of recommendation may be submitted through file upload via the Foundation’s online application system or sent directly to the Foundation staff by email or standard mail. As these letters are integral to the review process, nominees are encouraged to contact the Foundation via email to ascertain whether or not recommendations have been received.

Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
