Office of Research
Breakthrough Science Initiative Awards 2019
Annually, the Ono Pharma Foundation considers proposals from PIs for research that could ultimately transform human health. Although additional areas of research may be added in future years, in 2019 the Ono Pharma Foundation will only consider proposals for scientific research projects addressing one of the following two fields of science:
- Chemical Biology Research
- Target research of Chemical Biology is not specified. Chemical Biology is defined as research that deals with the interface between chemistry and biology. The criteria for this field is deliberately broad so as not to disqualify potentially innovative and groundbreaking projects.
- Oligonucleotide Medicine Research
- Target research of Oligonucleotide Medicine is defined as "Groundbreaking work using synthetic oligonucleotides to gain broadly valuable insights into molecular mechanisms, delivery strategies, pharmacology, or physiologic targets". Given the difficulty of achieving real progress, we strongly encourage interdisciplinary collaborations. It is essential that applicants or an applicant team be knowledgeable regarding the current state of the art in Oligonucleotide Medicine. Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of standards for ensuring rigor and explain why the proposal is designed to fill a major gap in knowledge or stimulate a new area of research. We encourage applications from investigators who understand the most contemporary issues confronting the field of Oligonucleotide Medicine and who are applying their research to existing and future problems.
Application Instructions
Please submit:
- a one-page letter of intent with a description of proposed aims and approach
- Biosketch or CV of the PI
- A letter of support from the Dean or Chair. This letter of support signifies that the Dean or Chair have ensured that the nominee and application are likely to be of sufficient quality to be competitive nationally
to research@uw.edu by 5:00 PM Thursday January 3, 2019. Proposals are due to the sponsor 2/28/19, so you will need to have your materials in to the Office of Sponsored Programs by 2/20/19 for processing, if given the go ahead by the Proposal Review Committee.
Inquiries and Contact Information
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
