National Endowment for the Humanities: 2020 Summer Stipends

The National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends competition supports two- and four-year college and university teachers and other humanists in their research and teaching by providing a stipend for two consecutive months of full-time study or research during the summer.  The maximum stipend is $6,000.  The University of Washington, Seattle campus, is be permitted to nominate two members of its tenure-track faculty.  (Tacoma and Bothell campuses have independent processes.)

Detailed information about the program, eligibility and process can be found on the NEH website at:  http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends. Please read this information carefully, particularly regarding eligibility.

Application Instructions

By Friday, August 2, 2019, please submit a draft of a detailed description for the proposed study, not to exceed three single-spaced pages, along with a two-page curriculum vitae. Send these documents electronically as MS Word or pdf files to my assistant, Barbara Mack, at barbmack@uw.edu. We also need an endorsement from your departmental chair, which needs to come directly from the chair to Barbara.

By Monday, August 19, 2019, I will notify the two faculty selected to submit full proposals.  The nominees must enter their applications on-line directly to NEH by the final deadline of
September 25, 2019.  (Please send a copy of the final proposal to this office also).  The nominees will be asked to enter two people who will provide letters of reference, and should enter Brian Reed, Divisional Dean of Humanities, as the institution’s nominating official.  NEH will then send me an email asking me to confirm the UW Seattle nominations.

Questions regarding the internal process?  Contact Barbara Mack.

Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
