2020 Robin Roberts Cancer Thrivership Research Award

Note: FHCRC are coordinating this limited submission and ask that UW applicants submit pre-proposals to research@uw.edu by 5/4/20. The UW review committee will then review, rank, and send on to FHCRC.

Synopsis:

In honor of Robin Roberts, the V Foundation for Cancer Research has established a research fund in her name, which will fund research related to cancer survivorship. This grant opportunity will fund translational research to understand the underlying biological basis of these health disparities in cancer survivorship with a goal to improve outcomes for patients, including:

  • observational studies focused on a population in which disparities exist to advance knowledge about etiology and to inform novel prevention strategies
  • studies to identify the genetic contributors to cancer health disparities
  • studies to understand the biologic mechanisms through which risk factors across different populations act (e.g. diet related microbiome effects)
  • studies of human population genetics to inform interpretations of disparate effects of cancer drugs and therapies across patient populations.

Eligibility:

The nominee must be the lead Principal Investigator (PI) on the Research Team and must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Nominated by their Cancer Center Director or similar high ranking research official.
  • Applicant must be employed at a non-profit research institution (e.g. 501c3, Section 170).
  • Either a U.S. Citizen or have a legal permit (temporary or permanent) to work in the U.S. This requirement does not apply to invited Canadian institutions.
  • Hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position (non-promotable adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for Principal Investigator nomination to lead the Research Team)

Funding:

  • $600,000 total paid in three annual installments of $200,000/year.
  • A maximum of 10% of the grant may be used annually to offset the indirect costs of the project.

Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
