CZ Biohub
Time Sensitive Request: To help OR coordinate a UW CZ Biohub LOI submission, please complete the attached short form (1 page) with your ideas for potential grand themes/challenges, partner institutions and planning committee members. Send the completed form to research@uw.edu with CZ Biohub in the subject line by February 4, 2022.
Background: The UW Office of Research is coordinating efforts for a possible UW submission to the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Call for letter of intent (LOI).
In December 2021, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) announced a 10-year effort to develop the science and technologies to observe, measure, and analyze human biology in action. As part of this effort, and modeled on the success of the San Francisco-based CZ Biohub, they are forming a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network, in which new Biohubs will be created to bring together leading scientific and technology institutions with the goal of pursuing grand scientific challenges on 10- to 15-year time horizons. More detailed information on this effort can be found here. Email research@uw.edu to receive the slideset (3 slides).
The next CZ Biohub in this Network will be set up as a non-profit medical research organization that is chosen through a competitive application process. LOIs for this competition are due April 1, 2022. The new CZ Biohub will focus on developing new technologies to measure and observe human biology in ways that deepen understanding of human health and disease. The ideal scientific themes will be of very broad scope, be interdisciplinary in nature, present significant engineering challenges (such as, for instance, require new technical solutions), and be wildly ambitious. If you have not yet formed the specific collaboration (such as engineering) to address your scientific goal, we will attempt to make an appropriate connection for you. Finally, the focus area of the new CZ Biohub should be different fromtheexisting CZI portfolio, which includes Infectious disease, Quantitative cell science, Neuroscience and AI, Advanced Biomedical Imaging.
Application Instructions
Submit this information (no more than 1 page):
1. General Theme and some key questions/challenges that will be addressed, and technologies that might be developed:
2. Strength that UW brings to this research area:
3. Which UW departments/centers/institutes should be involved to be successful for this theme:
4. Potential Partner Institutions in Seattle listing strengths of each:
5. Key individuals from UW and/or other institutions who should be involved in the planning committee for this theme (mid level career)
Inquiries and Contact Information
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
