I am writing to urge you to consider nominating your promising early career faculty for a Sloan Research Fellowship.  In order to be considered for a Sloan Research Fellowship, a candidate must have a letter of nomination from a department head or other senior researcher.

Our UW faculty have a high success rate in obtaining Sloan Fellowships and when we compare ourselves to our peer institutions, it is clear that there is room for even greater numbers of UW faculty to obtain Fellowships. But we need to nominate more candidates.

Sloan Fellowships are open to scholars in eight scientific and technical fields—chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences, and physics.

Faculty in tenure-track positions who are not yet tenured (as of September 15, 2022) and who have a regular teaching obligation are eligible to apply.

Awards are $75,000 over two years in flexible research funds.  The award dollar amount is not large, but the benefits of being named a Sloan Research Fellow can be sizable. Sloan Research Fellowships provide an early signal of Fellows’ promise and potential, and may help them secure subsequent awards. UW Sloan Research Fellows have won other larger early career awards, including those from Pew, Searle, Packard, and Moore. UW Sloan Research Fellows also have won Keck awards for path-breaking work in their fields.

Please note that more than one candidate from a department may be nominated, but no more than three.
