Office of Research
New Directions Fellowship 2023
The Mellon Foundation has invited the UW to nominate one faculty member who wishes to pursue training outside her/his/their field for a New Directions Fellowship. Please notice that eligibility for these awards is limited to faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences at UW Seattle who have received their PhD within the past 6-12 years (i.e., between 2011 and 2017). Fellows undertake systematic training beyond their fields of specialization in order to acquire the new competencies needed for the pursuit of a cross-disciplinary research agenda.
• Priority will be given to applications that manifest 1) a strong focus on questions of social justice as they pertain to minoritized populations, or 2) an investment in filling in the gaps left by more traditional narratives in the history of the Americas.
• The second field of study must be a foray into a new area of intellectual inquiry/subject and not just an enhancement of skills to go further in the primary field. Language study, technical training, or skills acquisition such as GIS mapping do not, by themselves, constitute a new direction.
Application Instructions
To be considered for this fellowship, interested faculty should submit a three-page proposal, explaining the rationale, addressing interests of the foundation above and outlining their new direction education and training plan to the Office of Research Limited Submission email, limitedsubs@uw.edu, no later than Friday, September 8 at 5 PM. For more information about the fellowship and to see past awardees, please visit the Mellon Foundation website.
Inquiries and Contact Information
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
