Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program

The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program provides $6 million annually for research that explores causes and effects and potential solutions to important national challenges. The funds support high-caliber research and writing and can be used for travel, hiring research assistants, and taking sabbaticals.

In a departure from previous years of the fellowship that supported a broad range of research topics, the single theme for the next three years of applications is political polarization in the United States. The foundation’s goal is to help Americans understand how and why our society has become so polarized and what can be done to strengthen the forces of cohesion.

Eligibility Requirements

Regardless of title, a junior scholar is defined as someone who received a Ph.D. within the last ten years (2013–2023 for the 2024 fellowship program).

Application Instructions

Please submit:

  1. A one‐page letter of intent with a description of proposed aims and approach.

  4. A letter of nomination from the Dean or Chair that includes verification of the candidate’s start date. Inquiries and Contact Information

Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.

For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
