Note: This is not a limited submission but requires some institutional coordination and is being announced as a courtesy. Interested PIs should contact Liz Exell (lexell@uw.edu) and Andrew Storms (as89@uw.edu) in Corporate and Foundation Relations.
Targeted Grants to Math+AI Institutes is a one-time call to support established institutes or centers to specifically address AI challenges. This program will provide funding for the general area of Math+AI, to support workshops and initiatives that help researchers evaluate recent AI-assisted results applying the standards used by the math community, learn and use new tools, share perspectives and shape collective standards for AI use. It will not provide primary support for the operation or establishment of an institute. This program will also not support initiatives, consortiums or organizations that do not have a physical space. This program was created in partnership with Anthropic and OpenAI, which may each grant additional funding separate from the foundation.
Funding:
- Award Amount: Up to $500,000 USD, inclusive of 20 percent indirect costs (see grant policies); annual budgets should be around $250,000 per year, although the foundation would allow the annual budget to vary from $250,000 as long as the total two-year budget is no more than $500,000.
- Award Duration: Two years; awards can begin no earlier than March 1, 2027, and must begin no later than June 1, 2027.
- Number of Awards: The foundation expects to award up to five grants. Additional awards may be issued via this call by OpenAI and Anthropic, subject to their policies and procedures. Applications received by the Simons Foundation in response to this call may be shared, upon applicant consent, with OpenAI and Anthropic for their funding consideration.
- Future Funding: Awards will not be considered for renewal.
Eligibility Requirements
Applications may be submitted by established U.S. and foreign public and private educational and nonprofit institutes and research centers. The program is not intended to support institutes or centers whose main purpose is to provide a focal point for research of faculty at a specific university. This program will not support national labs, or the equivalent, with a primary focus on experiments.

Inquiries and Contact Information
Investigators who identify a grant, award or fellowship program that restricts the number of applications that can be submitted from an Institution should immediately contact their Chairperson, Associate Dean for Research (or Dean, if no ADR) and the Office of Research (see below) if they intend to prepare a response. Failure to do so, or to meet the deadlines for submission of pre-proposal, will preclude submission of the application through the Office of Sponsored Programs.
For general inquiries, or to request a listing of a limited submission opportunity that should be but is not already listed, please email us at limitedsubs@uw.edu.
