Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation in Alternative Fuels for Transportation

The State of Israel considers the research and development of technologies that reduce the global use of oil in transportation an international concern and a top national priority. Thus, in 2011, the government of Israel, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, initiated the National Program to Reduce the Global Dependence on Oil, with an aim of encouraging global innovation and scientific breakthroughs in the field of alternative transportation fuels. In order to promote the goals of this initiative, the Prime Minister’s Office, together with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Keren Hayesod-UIA, will grant an annual award: "The 2013 Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister's Prize for Innovation in Alternative Fuels for Transportation". The prize will be awarded for global innovation or a scientific or technological breakthrough in the field of alternative fuels for transportation. Nominees for the prize should be actively engaged in innovative, paradigm-shifting research in this field that is worthy of significant and widespread attention and recognition.

Nominees for the Israeli Prime Minister's Prize for Global Innovation in the Field of Energy Alternatives for Petroleum Use in Transportation should be actively engaged in innovative, paradigm-shifting research or technology development of alternative energy  for use in transportation  that is worthy of significant and broad attention and recognition.

The Application Letter must include a detailed description of the nominee’s major scientific research accomplishments related to the Prize’s mission and the impact of these contributions to the field of Alternative Energy for Petroleum use. Please cite up to ten (10) representative, peer-reviewed publications by the nominee and describe shortly how each was novel, paradigm changing, or seminal in advancing knowledge or technology related to alternatives energy for transportation. Up to three (3) supporting letters can be added. 

Up to three (3) candidates can receive the award in a particular year. They may receive the prize for independent research or jointly for a collaborative research. One can submit  up to three candidate for scientifically independent research, in this case use a separate form for each of the candidates. In the case that several candidates are submitted for collaborative work, each candidate should be submitted in a separate form, with the names of the jointly filed candidates inserted into the appropriate place. Please state this fact at the beginning of the brief description section for each candidate. The brief description of the collaborative work conducted need not be repeated in relation to the joint candidates. You may , however, wish to describe each candidate's specific role in the collaboration. The prize committee can request additional information, either from the candidate, or from the institution(s) where he/she is active--informing the institution of the nomination, or from independent referees without disclosing the nominator's name.

Application Instructions

Please submit a two-page letter of intent with a list of all anticipated investigators, description of proposed aims and approach, Biosketch of the PI, and a letter of support from the Dean or Chair to research@uw.edu by Thursday, May 2, 2013. This letter of support signifies that the Dean or Chair have ensured that the nominee and application are likely to be of sufficient quality to be competitive nationally. Full nominations are due to the sponsor on 5/31/13, so you will need to have your materials in to the Office of Sponsored Programs by 5/24/13 for processing if given the go ahead by the review committee.
