Research Interest

Aderem, Alan PhD

Institute of Systems Biology, Affiliate Immunology and Medicine

Mechanisms of phagocytosis and cell movement; macrophage development and differentiation

Bornfeldt, Karin E PhD

Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition (Medicine), Pathology (Medicine)

Focuses on elucidating the cellular mechanisms leading to accelerated atherosclerosis in disease states associated with inflammation, such as diabetes and, recently, lupus. Interested in understanding how monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and endothelial cells are affected by these diseases. One area of interest is the interaction between fatty acids and inflammation. Overexpression or deletion acyl-CoA synthetase isoforms is performed to address whether increased or decreased fatty acyl-CoA load alters biological function. Mouse models of accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetes and lupus are used to investigate and validate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of these diseases. Models include low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient mice, bone marrow transplanted mice, and mice treated with retroviral vectors to overexpress different proteins under myeloid cell-selective promoters.
