The missions of this division are research, education and patient care of the many kinds of arthritis and all the rheumatic diseases. Nine full-time faculty members, thirty volunteer clinical faculty members and an able staff carry out the programs of this division.

 

Patient Care

m.gif (543 bytes)embers of this division have expertise in the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of rheumatic disease, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, spondylitis, reactive arthritis, inflammatory muscle diseases, various forms of vasculitis, soft tissue syndromes and other less frequent rheumatic diseases. Patient care is provided at the University of Washington Medical Center, the Harborview Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.  Specific information on the clinics is listed under Patient Care.

Education

 t.gif (543 bytes)he faculty teaches medical students, students in other health-related fields, residents in internal medicine, and resident physicians training in other specialties of medicine. The division has an active fellowship program to prepare individuals for a career in rheumatology. The fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is funded by a research training grant from the National Institutes of Health. Research

t.gif (543 bytes)o increase knowledge of rheumatic diseases and thereby improve the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders, this division is committed to research. Particular emphasis is placed on the disease mechanisms in rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and gout. Recently, new insights have been gained into the disease processes of scleroderma.

The research conducted by members of the faculty has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, from foundations and local donors.  Research findings are published regularly in national and international scientific journals. In addition, faculty members have contributed to many textbooks on rheumatology and internal medicine.
