Dr. Robert H. Williams was the first chairman (1948-1963) of the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington. In his distinguished career, Dr. Williams published more than 300 scientific papers and his Textbook of Endocrinology is considered a classic and has been translated into several languages, His legacy continues in an outstanding School of Medicine, Department of Medicine, and the Robert H. Williams Endowed Chair in Medicine.
The research at the Robert H. Williams laboratory is centered on the way that autoimmune, or type 1 diabetes develops. The focus of that research is to discover genetic factors in the human and spontaneously diabetic BB rat that provide susceptibility and determine how those genes, together with environmental factors, allow the immune system to attack the insulin-producing cells in the islets of the pancreas.
