Since Spring 2004, the UW Rome Center, in conjunction with ItaliaIdea language school, has hosted the Contemporary Italian Cinema series. Film screenings are followed by question-and-answer sessions with guest directors and actors. Students and faculty from other American universities as well as from foreign cultural centers and academies are also invited to these events.
Memorable screenings and meetings include those featuring directors Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino, Paolo Virzi', Gabriele Muccino, Davide Ferrario, Daniele Vicari, Ferzan Ozpetek, Gabriele Salvatores, Mimmo Calopresti, Francesca Archibugi, Silvio Soldini, Alina Marazzi, Agostino Ferrente, Giuseppe Piccioni, actress Maya Sansa, and actors Luigi Lo Cascio and Silvio Orlando, among others.
