Finding a home for its programs in Rome was the realization of a dream for the first UW Rome programs. Many University departments have initiated programs over the years, and the 18,000 square feet of living, instructional and support facilities are organized to serve a range of needs. The University began restoration of its quarters in the Palazzo Pio in 1984. The Center was used by University students starting in Spring of 1985, and has been used continuously since its inauguration by a growing number of UW programs. The facility provides studios, classrooms, a library and computer lab, student lounge, conference room, administrative office and faculty accommodations. The restoration of two floors of the Palazzo Pio was completed in 1988 and a third floor was renovated in 1997. The long-term commitment of the UW Rome Center in renovating these floors of the Palazzo Pio was an exercise not only in renovation, but the return of an historic legacy to daily use.
