PREFERISCO IL RUMORE DEL MARE The uneasy rapport between North and South as well as the divisions between classes and generations have often been central themes in Italian films. Director Mimmo Calopresti brings delicacy and emotional resonance to these issues in "I Prefer the Sound of the Sea." Melancholy without being ponderous, this [is a] densely textured, plaintive drama about the friendship between two adolescent boys from different worlds. [...]"I Prefer the Sound of the Sea" -- the title's taken from a verse by early 20th century Italian poet Dino Campana -- is a challenging work that declines explicit definition of its characters or their motivations ... LA PAROLA AMORE ESISTE Angela (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), a neurotic thirtysomething from a well-to-do family, lives with a mother with whom it is impossible to communicate. The charmingly daffy Angela believes in omens, superstitions and numerology. She thinks herself in love with a divorced cello teacher (Fabrizio Bentivoglio), a sweet, handsome, distracted man who is lost without a woman in his life. She showers him with anonymous love letters which Marco erroneously thinks are written by one of his students. The path these two find to each other is the least direct one, but even then, who knows what fortune has in store?
