STUDENT INTERNSHIP 2008/09

In 2001 the University of Washington established a Rome Center Student
Internship position. This position is designed to provide University of
Washington students with practical experience working in an office
environment, and especially affording them the opportunity for contact
with a cultural environment other than their own. This single Internship
position is especially suited to a student enrolled at the University of
Washington while working on Italian language studies or on other
independent study topic which would be enriched by study in Italy. The
Rome Center Student Internship position is outlined below.

GENERAL TERMS:

Dates: July 2008 - July 2009

20-hour work week

Flexible hours; some hours may be required outside normal office hours

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:
Must be enrolled for study at the UW for duration of internship. Previous
student interns have arranged for "Concurrent Enrollment" through the
Office of International Programs and Exchanges (IPE). This requires a UW
faculty member to oversee independent study, but for more information

Prior participation on a UW Rome-based academic program

WAGES & HOUSING:
Studio apartment at Rome Center provided (includes all utilities except phone)

$400 monthly stipend

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Study visa (long-stay, multiple-entry type) for 1 year

Basic understanding of spoken Italian

Basic understanding of computer hardware & software

JOB DUTIES:
Library & computer lab assistance (monitoring computer lab & library, assisting work study students, shelving & cataloging library materials and providing general assistance)

Help students get settled, integrated into life in Rome

Assist staff and faculty (setting up classrooms, problem-solving, handling keys and deposits, assisting with A/V equipment, etc.)

General office assistance (errands, filing, distributing mail, photocopying, etc.)

Other (as assigned by supervisor; Student Intern reports to Rome Center Associate Director)

Previous student interns have thoroughly enjoyed becoming "Romans" for a year, and we have loved their enthusiastic and capable assistance. If you are interested in this position, please feel free to write and ask for
