This image is a maximum intensity projection of 3-dimensional image acquired with our Fluoview-1000 laser scanning confocal microscope (Olympus). The optical volume was deconvolved with Huygens Essential (Scientific Volume Imaging, Hilversum, NL) to remove residual out of focus light and the the projection colors were adjusted with Photoshop (Adobe).

It received 2nd place in the the 2006 Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition, an international competition to recognize the finest images of life science specimens captured through light microscopes, using any magnification and any brand of equipment. Entries must include information on the importance or “story” behind the images. Over 1,000 entries were received. The award is accompanied by $2,500 worth of Olympus products. A selection of the winning images are published in the February, 2007 issue of Scientific American.
