MESA SCIENCE PROGRAM for GIRLS

The goal of this program, which brings together a culturally diverse group of 36 middle school girls, is to increase the number of female students pursuing careers in mathematics, engineering and the sciences. The summer program focuses on the use of computers in the sciences, and is followed by monthly workshops at the University during the ensuing school year. The workshops prepare the students for the Washington Science Teachers Science and Engineering Contest.

The MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program's mission is to assist Washington state and the nation in achieving an educated citizenry that is globally competitive and individually competent in mathematics, engineering and science, with full participation of African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and women. MESA accomplishes this through a partnership of higher education, school districts, business and industry, community organizations, families and alumni. MESA programs for students include the MESA Engineering Projects Class, integrated middle-level curriculum, study groups, summer enrichment and employment programs, field trips, tutoring, academic, college and career advising and scholarship incentive awards.
