Water Detectives of Cowiche Creek H ighland High School is a public high school surrounded by orchards in the foothills of the Cascade mountains.
![]() Highland researchers conducted a series of water quality tests on a local creek in 1996 and 1997. They found that flooding in 1997 did affect the water quality of Cowiche Creek. The water had a higher level of Ammonium Nitrate due to an increase in agricultural runoff. Research Question: How does the water quality of a stream change over time? Pili: We have worked on this project for two years now. It was difficult sometimes to find the time to take the samples. We tested water quality using a testing kit. Angie:We also tested the soil quality. We found that very deep, well-drained soil is on the uplands. Permeability of this soil is moderate. The available water capacity is high. Runoff is medium, and the hazard of water erosion is moderate.
