Prevention of Sexual Harassment & Discrimination Program
A prevention program created by and for UW academic student employees— including graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, research assistants, staff assistants, graders, and tutors.
Established during negotiations for the 2018-2020 UW/UAW collective bargaining agreement, the UW and UAW Local 4121 agreed to jointly create an innovative Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Program to educate and provide skill-building specifically geared to the unique dual role academic student employees play as both students and employees. It is a shared goal of both the University and the UAW to support prevention-focused culture change.
The Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Program is developed and managed by two UW graduate student training specialists under the guidance of UW SafeCampus and in close coordination with key stakeholders including: academic departments, UW Medicine, Title IX, Student Life/Student Affairs/Student Services, the Graduate School, and UAW Local 4121. Our goal is to develop the program in a way that is responsive to the needs of individual departments and communities and that will endeavor to:
- Shift UW culture and create new community norms,
- Empower academic student employees to prevent and respond to sexual harassment, and
- Enable academic student employees to identify how various dimensions of power and identity intersect to create oppressions that set the stage for sexual harassment and discrimination to occur.
A comprehensive 3-hour interactive training session for UW academic student employees will be rolled out during Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 academic quarters. This Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Training specific to academic student employees will examine sexual harassment in a new way and include:
- Discussion of what constitutes sexual harassment,
- Rights and resources available,
- The roles individuals play in stopping harassment, and
- Building skills to create safer workplaces, interrupt harassment when it happens and support those who experience harassment.
Trainings will be tailored to individual departments, workplaces and graduate and undergraduate student communities. We will also be reaching out to departments individually to begin scheduling trainings for their academic student employees. This page will be updated regularly with more information about trainings opportunities for academic student employees as the program develops further.

Paige Sechrest – PSHD Training Specialist
Paige is a PhD Candidate in the Political Science department. She specializes in public law, comparative politics, and quantitative methodology. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a degree in political science. Her dissertation explores how various publics interpret violent interactions between police officers and people of color in France in order to understand the extent to which the notion of the rights-bearing citizen has transformed to include the very people it was designed to marginalize. In addition to being a graduate student, she is a poetry lover and a news junkie.
Sam Sumpter – PSHD Training Specialist
Sam is a PhD candidate in the UW Department of Philosophy and has been an active member of UAW Local 4121 since they arrived at UW in 2014. In that time, Sam’s academic and organizing work have both focused on intersectional feminism and economic justice, and they are deeply committed to making higher education more meaningfully accessible and inclusive for people from underrepresented groups. Sam is incredibly excited to be a part of the team developing these new Prevention of Sexual Harassment Trainings, and looks forward to working with folks across UW’s three campuses to build a successful program.
Kiana Swearingen – PSHD Program Supervisor
Kiana coordinates and conducts prevention efforts for SafeCampus. She has worked in the anti-violence field for over 10 years. In addition to her time at the University of Washington she has worked as a domestic violence advocate and a community based prevention educator. She has trained nationally on theory driven community centered best practices for developing and conducting prevention efforts on college campuses. She was also selected as a faculty member for the Department of Justices Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigation and Adjudication Institute. Kiana is excited to be part of an innovative prevention program for graduate student employees and hopes that it can be a model for other institutions intending to do similar work.
