The biennial Health and Safety Committee election process is underway for the 2010-2011 term. The Department of Environmental Health & Safety is represented on the University’s Group 1 committee by elected members from organizational units reporting to the Provost. All employees are encouraged to participate, including full-time faculty, staff, temporary, hourly, and student employees.
This is a call for nominations.
Please consider nominating a candidate to run in the election for your Group 1 representative. Who do you know who is interested in health and safety in our workplace? Who would be willing to serve for two years? More details regarding participation in the committee are available at the bottom of this email.

Nominations will be accepted for a period of two weeks (through November 1, 2009).

BALLOT You will receive another announcement in mid-November when the election ballot is posted and voting is opened. **** More Details about Health and Safety Committees The UW Health and Safety Committees are mandated by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries to help identify and effectively manage workplace health and safety issues.
Group 1 membership includes the following organizational units: Advancement Applied Physics Lab College of Education Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs External Affairs Foster School of Business Human Resources Information School Intercollegiate Athletics Minority Affairs Office of Information Management Office of the President Office of the Provost School of Law The Graduate School University Libraries UW Technology
Committee Responsibilities Committee members review and evaluate incident/accident reports, review and evaluate accident and illness prevention programs, and provide a forum for employee concerns about health and safety. The Committees work at the unit level, advising Committee Heads (in the case of Group 1, the Provost). Who can vote? All staff, faculty, temporary, hourly, and student employees may participate. Students not employed by the University of Washington should ignore this message.
Who can you nominate? You may nominate yourself OR any person in any of the above-listed organizational units. A person may be re-elected. The nominee cannot have a managerial role or above. A managerial role is a position that (1) has manager in its title, (2) can both hire employees and terminate employment, (3) manages resources, (4) has responsibility for planning and directing the work group, and (5) monitors group work.
Term of office The elected representative serves for two years (January 2010 through December 2011), with the option of running in future elections.
Commitment Group 1 typically meets on a monthly basis. Depending on the agenda, meeting length is approximately one hour. Participation in sub-committees is optional. |
