Student Governments at UW
The Student Activities Office (SAO) advises the Associated
Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) and the Graduate
and Professional Student Sentate (GPSS). Both ASUW and GPSS are governed
by students elected into leadership positions.
ASUW is the student government for all students on
campus. The purpose of the ASUW is to enrich student life outside the classroom
by providing services, employment, leadership and volunteer opportunities for
students. The ASUW also reserves funds each year for allocation to student organization
events. In addition to services, the ASUW advocates on students' behalf by sitting
on University and faculty committees, lobbying state and national lawmakers,
and working closely with faculty, administration and community leaders.
GPSS is the student government for the graduate and
professional students at the University of Washington. GPSS provides students
with representation both on campus and in the legislature. In addition, GPSS
acts as a resource center and funds graduate programming and departmental resources.
The GPSS Senate is made up of two senators from each academic department and
one senator from each of eight under-represented groups.
