FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
Money and Funding
My RSO would like to have a fundraiser. Can the SAO help?
Yes. The Student Activities staff has plenty of fundraising
ideas and resources available to student organizations. Stop by the SAO or contact your SAO Adviser. Any fundraiser by an RSO
must follow the Fund Raising/Sales Policies and apply for a Fundraising Permit through SAO.
What's a Fund Raising Permit and why do we need one?
There are University
Policies that govern commercial activities on campus whether it be a
department, individual, office, or organization. Any time an RSO plans to
handle cash on campus, they are responsible for meeting with the SAO to
make sure that all fund raising requirements are met and that the policies
are understood and followed. RSO's who disregard the fund raising policies
are subject to disciplinary procedures through the SAO. Check here for information
on how to get a Fund Raising Permit from the SAO.
How do we request funding from the ASUW or GPSS for an event?
That process is called the "Special Appropriations"
because the ASUW and GPSS have special monies set aside to assist RSO's
in providing quality programs and events for the UW community. The process
can take 4-6 weeks so RSO's should begin this process well in advance of
their event date. It is necessary to meet with your SAO Adviser to prepare
the budget and proposal necessary to present to the ASUW Finance and Budget
Committee and possibly the Board of Control or GPSS. The SAO Adviser will
assist in making sure that all ASUW and GPSS criteria for requesting money
have been met and that the proper procedures are followed. Please see ASUW
and GPSS Funding for more information.
How do we reqest funding from SAUF (Student Activities& Union Facilties)?
SAUF has a limited funding source available
for events that are held in specific rooms in the HUB or South Campus
Center and are open to the UW community. There is an application process
and the funding only goes toward reservation and staffing costs. Equipment
rentals are not included. The maximum amount of funding is $1000.00 and
you must be working with your SAO adviser in order to request funding
support.

We're trying to open a bank account for our RSO and we've been asked for a Tax ID number. What is that and how do we get one?
Tax IDs (also known as Employer Identification
Numbers - EINs) are issued only by the Internal
Revenue Service. Tax IDs (EINs) are necessary most often when opening a bank account for an RSO.
However, there may be other instances when an RSO will be asked to have or provide an EIN.
The SAO has the EIN request form (SS-4) available in the office. All requests must be submitted directly to the IRS.
Additionally, please check the following resources:

It's extremely important to keep your RSOs EIN and any EIN documentation
readily available for the officers of your RSO, especially as officers
change from year to year.
