Each of these participants brings to this panel deep experience in working with Ibsen’s plays in performance, whether as actor, director, or translator, and each has thought in depth about what makes a translation work well on stage. We will take advantage of their experience by running this session as a panel discussion, with initial 10-15 minute statements from each of the participants, followed by a moderated discussion. The panel will focus on theater practice, with an emphasis on the idea of translating Ibsen effectively for stage actors. Relevant issues may include: defining the characteristics of a good performance translation; translation and improvisation in the rehearsal process; the translating process as the imagination of vocalization; ingenious literary translations that do not work well on stage; collaboration between directors and translators; and the line between performance translations and adaptations.
