I will show that many of the finest Scandinavian to English dictionaries available on the market today are woefully inadequate in a number of regards, but most particularly in terms of including a viable U.S. English translation alternative. I will draw countless amusing examples from the following dictionaries:
Gyldendals Dansk-Engelsk Ordbog. 4th Ed. 1998
Kirkebys Stor Engelsk Ordbok: Norsk-Engelsk. 2nd Ed. 2003.
Kunnskapsforlagets Norsk-Engelsk Stor Ordbok. 2002.
Norstedts Comprehensive Swedish-English Dictionary. 3rd Ed. 2000.
I will show through the number of Google hits such entries get that essentially no one in the world uses the terms the dictionary suggests (0-40 hits) while with relative ease one can come up with a better translation that the dictionary has not included that will get a million hits or more. I will suggest a few strategies that the translator can employ to deal with this crisis.
