About SAUF
Student Activities and Union Facilities (SAUF) is
one of many University departments under the division
of Student Life. The division is administered by
the Vice-Provost
for Student Life who reports to the University
President.
Management is provided by staff of SAUF who guide the department, which includes
managing the operations of two facilities, the Husky Union Building (HUB) and South
Campus Center (SCC), as well as the campus Student Activities program.
SAUF provides a variety of student employment and training opportunities which enhance
the out-of-classroom experience. Student employees play a key role in the organization
as they are often the only staff members with whom the public comes in contact.
Training sessions on both general and job related topics are offered. Additionally,
students and staff have the opportunity to work together on a variety of committees.
An advisory committee, the Student Union Facilities Advisory Board (SUFAB), consists
of seven students, two faculty and two University staff who are all voting members.
This committee advises SAUF management on a variety of issues including use of building
space and changes in policies and procedures.
Student Union Facilities (HUB and SCC)
The center for many student activities is the Husky
Union Building (HUB). More recently, the South
Campus Center (SCC) has served students in the
South Campus and Health Sciences area. Each day,
over 18,000 members of the University community,
a majority of who are students, use the facilities.
The Unions offer amenities which supplement and
support the academic program, including food
service and catering, newsstands, a ticket office,
recreational areas, information desk, main campus
lost and found, transit information, lamination
and fax services, lounges, meeting rooms, style
shops and branches of the University Bookstore and
U.S. Bank. Student organizations are given priority
consideration for use of space in the HUB and SCC,
which provides both free- and low-cost rooms for
meetings, events and activities. Fifty student organizations
and the Associated Students of the University of
Washington (ASUW) and the Graduate and Professional
Student Senate (GPSS) are provided offices in the
facilities.
To supplement SAUF services, space is leased to the University Book Store, Scissor’s
Edge hair salon, U.S. Bank in the HUB, Flair for Hair salon, and University Book Store
branch at South Campus Center.
The University
Ombudsman and the Foundation for International Understanding Through
Students (FIUTS) also have office space in the HUB. While these groups do not pay rent
to SAUF, they contribute to the variety of activities offered both in the union buildings
and around campus.
Student Activities Office
The Student Activities Office serves as the primary liaison with the two student
government associations (ASUW and GPSS) and over 650 registered student organizations.
The office provides advising and guidance to student organizations in the planning
and implementation of programs and helps students carry out their programs in a manner
consistent with institutional policies and sound administrative practices. Students
participate in workshops, classes and other programs organized by this office to
complement their classroom pursuits.
