In
1984, during the seventy-fifth anniversary celebration of
the founding of
the Department of Scandinavian Studies, in order to
facilitate better
contact with the many Scandinavian/Nordic
communities of
Washington state, the Department invited
several individuals
to help establish
an Advisory Board. Representatives from
several Scandinavian
groups,
as well as individuals
with a strong interest in the mission of
the Department,
constituted a group of advisors and friends which
would
serve as a liaison between the Department and the
Scandinavian/Nordic communities of the Pacific Northwest.
Meeting quarterly, the Advisory Board supports
the
Department's mission to meet its community service
commitments.
In 1996, the Advisory
Board began discussions on ways in
which private fundraising
could enhance student opportunities and
strengthen the Depatment's many
programs in order to ensure the continued
success of Scandinavian studies at the University of Washington. Since
January, 1997, representatives
of the three Baltic
Communities serve on the Advisory Board.
Their goal is to
support the continued development of Baltic
Studies in the Department,
currently the only department in North America
which teaches all three
Baltic languages.
The current members of the Board
are:
