Aija Elg has taught Finnish as a foreign language for 25 years. Her career includes teaching at Helsinki University Language Centre, Helsinki Summer University and University of Helsinki. During 1998 – 2000 she was a visiting lecturer of Finnish at Indiana University-Bloomington. She has served as a Finnish teacher in the European Commission’s Office in Finland and several adult learning institutions. She has also taught Finnish as a mother tongue and literature for seven years in Tikkurila Upper Secondary School.
Methodology and strategy for language learning and teaching has always been one of her special interests. She designed and implemented a professional development programm for the language teachers of Tampere University. In University of Helsinki’s Vantaa Institute for Continuing Education, she was tutored teacher trainees of Finnish as a foreign language. Her areas of expertise include foreign language methodology and pedagogy, and awareness of intercultural issues.
