Teaching & Research Assistantships
Academic Year 2009-2010
for UW Graduate Students in good standing

The Department of Scandinavian Studies is pleased to announce the availablility (pending funding) of graduate student appointments for Teaching/Research Assistant in Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and Scandinavian Area Studies for the academic year, 2009-2010. (Depending on funding, a Baltic Studies Teaching Assistantship may be available in Lithuanian and/or Estonian.) The Department expects to make 7 appointments of Teaching Assistantships and 1 appointment for a Research Assistantship. (NOTE: New applicants compete with continuing TA appointees for the available assistantships. )

Teaching Assistants are normally assigned duties teaching beginning language classes. Area Studies TAs are responsible for sections of large enrollment area studies courses taught in English. Research Assistants receive assignments relevant to research projects identified by the Department. Appointments require an average of 20 hours of work per week, and students are required to register for 10 credits or more, applicable to the degree, per quarter, and must maintain satisfactory progress toward the degree.

Applicants must:

  1. Have a B.A. degree in Scandinavian Studies or its equivalent and possess native, or near-native, proficiency in at least one Scandinavian (Nordic) language, and apply to, and be accepted by, the University of Washington Graduate School and the Department of Scandinavian Studies. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter hours or the last 60 semester hours of course work;
  2. Achieve a competitive score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (Graduate Record Exams should be taken sufficiently early to allow the results to be available to the Department by the annual application deadline. It is recommended that students interested in applying for the Autumn Quarter, take the GRE exam no later than October in the preceeding calendar year);
  3. Submit an Assistantship and Fellowship Application AND three letters of recommendation to the Department of Scandinavian Studies (Applications are available from the Departmental office);
  4. Submit two sets of official transcripts of ALL undergraduate and graduate work;
  5. Submit a statement of purpose and intent (as detailed as possible). Please note that this is not a personal history, but a statement of future goals, purpose and intent;
  6. Submit TSE or SPEAK and TOEFL scores (foreign students only!);
  7. Submit a 3-5 minute tape in the target language wherein the applicant discusses, among other things, any study or life experience in Scandinavia as well as academic interests and goals.

The position provides a monthly salary of approx. $1,400 plus a tuition (operating fee) waiver of around $1,569 per quarter. The student is responsible for the remaining student fees of approximately $150 per quarter and a technology fee (currently $42 per quarter).
