1. An award will be given to a student, undergraduate or graduate,
who is conducting a defined research project, either Senior Essay,
M.A. thesis, or Ph.D. dissertation, in the field of Scandinavian
Studies or in a related field (with Danish as the research language).
2. An award will be given to an undergraduate major or minor with an emphasis on Danish studies.
Please submit a brief biography, including a statement of educational objectives; a description of the research project (if applicable); transcripts; and two letters of recommendation (one from outside the Department).

This endowment honors the memory of Ann-Marie Lindqvist Gavel (1908-1996) and Gunnar Gavel (1908-1993) of Linköping, Sweden, whose strong interest in scholarship, higher education, and support for Swedish studies abroad will always be fondly remembered.
The purpose of this endowment is to provide support for undergraduate and graduate students in the Swedish program by such means as scholarships, travel stipends, research awards, and activities related to Swedish studies.
This $2,000 stipend is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and educational objectives in the area of Swedish language and literature or area studies with a Swedish emphasis.
Interested students should submit a letter of application, stating their educational objectives as they relate to the purposes of the Gavel Endowment, along with a current transcript, and two letters of recommendation (one from outside the Department of Scandinavian Studies).
Applicants should have demonstrated a serious interest in Scandinavian culture, especially in the areas of Danish and Swedish film, theatre or television history. Support may be in the form of travel stipends or other ways of obtaining relevant research material. Projects involving Senior Essay, M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation in the designated areas should be given preference.
Interested students should submit a statement of educational objectives, a description of the research project as it applies to the purposes of the Steene Endowment. Application should also include a current transcript and two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from outside the Department of Scandinavian Studies. The award amount is $1,500.
NorwegianThe purpose is to provide support for students in the Norwegian program by such means as scholarships, travel stipends, research awards, the purchase of teaching materials, and activities related to Norwegian studies. Awards will be made on the basis of academic achievement and educational objectives in the area of Norwegian language and literature or area studies with a Norwegian emphasis.
Interested students should submit a letter of application (include home address and phone numbers) stating their educational objectives as they relate to the purposes of the Holdal Fund, along with current transcripts, and two letters of recommendation (one letter must be from someone not associated with the Department of Scandinavian Studies). The award is expected to be about $2,000.

It covers all or part of undergraduate tuition expenses and may also provide support for books, fees, and other educational expenses. The award amount for this year is approx. $3,100.

NorwegianThe purpose of the Weingarten Endowed Fund is to provide support for the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington, with emphasis on providing financial assistance to students who are studying Norwegian language and literature. The award amount is $1,500.
Graduate students and Undergraduate students with a Norwegian
emphasis (major or minor)
in their studies may apply. An application letter, stating clearly
the purpose of the application, is required. In additon, an original
copy of all college transcripts, two letters of recommendation (one
must be from someone not associated with the Department of Scandinavian
Studies), must be submitted.
NorwegianThe Alf Kr. Aulie/Simrad, Inc. Endowed Fund was established by Randi Aulie and Brian Staton, President of Simrad, Inc., to provide support for students of Norwegian studies and the activities of the Norwegian program in the Department of Scandinavian Studies. Students in the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences and the College of Engineering who include Norwegian studies in their course of studies are also eligible for support from this fund.
In addition to support for the Norwegian program, the Alf Kr. Aulie/Simrad
Endowed Fund will provide a $1,500 scholarship for University of
Washington students. Interested students should send a letter of
application, along with an official copy of all college transcripts,
and three letters of recommendation.

Interested students should submit a Scholarship Application Form, a current transcript, a statement outlining research and/or writing plans, and a letter from the students Supervisory Committee Chair attesting to satisfactory progress.
Former professor and chair of the the Department, Sverre Arestad,
established this fund to support the publication of the histories
of the Scandinavian people, their cultures, and their
contributions to life in the Pacific Northwest.
This fund supports the publication of significant research projects on various aspects of Scandinavian-American history in the Pacific Northwest. Developed research projects are also eligible if they are at or near the publication stage.
Financial support for graduate students in the Department of Scandinavian Studies, to include grant for travel and stipends.

A $1,500 scholarship for graduate and undergraduate students of Finnish. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and educational objectives in the area of Finnish language and literature or area studies with a Finnish emphasis.

IcelandicThis fellowship is awarded to meritorious first-year graduate students with a demonstrated interest in Old Norse. This is a $2,000 fellowship grant.
