Public Health Social Work Training at the Seattle PPC

The purpose of the PPC Public Health Social Work training program is to develop public health social work leaders in the field of children's health care, public health, and children with special needs.

Through a supervised practicum, trainees learn about:

• interdisciplinary teams
• the effect of chronic illness on child development
• parental support systems
• crisis interventions techniques
• advocacy
• community systems of care

Upon completion of training, public health social work trainees will have acquired knowledge and skills in integrated community-based care of children with chronic conditions and their families.

Applying for a PPC traineeship in Social Work

Potential trainees should contact Anna Rhys-Johnson, MSW, LISCW, to discuss the traineeship in detail and receive application materials. Traineeships usually begin in the fall, although summer block placements can be accommodated.

First preference is given to University of Washington, School of Social Work students entering the second year MSW program. University of Washington students should discuss PPC traineeships with their faculty liaison. Non-University of Washington MSW students should contact Mary Jeanne Phipps directly.

Requirements

• MSW trainee in accredited school of social work or graduate MSW program

• Career goals that include work with children with special health care needs or systems dealing with children with special health care needs

• Interest in leadership activities

Application materials to be submitted:

• Completed application form

• Three letters of recommendation

• Personal goal statement including goals to be met by PPC training experience

• Sample of written material such as an article, academic paper, or patient education brochure

• Curriculum vitae

• Faculty/liaison endorsement for PPC traineeship
