This image was discovered at Tumshuk, a Buddhist center and oasis community on the eastern edge of Sogdian territory. Like the vase from Khotan also included in this exhibition, a number of design elements can be traced to the various cultures that informed Sogdian artists and artisans. Indian influence is seen in the soft and graceful folds of drapery, while the face is strongly reminiscent of Hellenistic sculpture. This work is representative of the tradition of sculpture and painting that developed in Bactria and Sogdiana in the mid-fifth through mid-eight centuries.
