Laser Hair Removal

Lasers have been available for hair removal and reduction for nearly two decades and have proven to be a safe and reliable solution for many people, trying to reduce unwanted hair.

At our clinic, we believe that the best results are obtained by having an on-site specialist in dermatology supervising the treatment program.  Your treatment will be performed by trained dermatologic registered nurses under the on-site supervision of  Dr Berg, an experienced dermatologist  and Director of Dermatologic Surgery.

FAQs

Which hair removal lasers does the UW derm clinic use?
We use the Candela GentleLASE and the Candela GentleYAG lasers.

Who is a good candidate?
Lasers are ideal for treatment of unwanted facial hair, armpit hair and bikini-line hair.  Other areas may also be treated successfully.
Lasers at the UW Dermatology Clinic allow for treatment of a wide variety of skin tones. It is important to know that hair removal lasers only work on darker colored hair (ideally dark brown or black).

How many treatments are needed?
Generally, a series of treatments is recommended initially, although frequency and amount vary depending on the area and patient characteristics.  An initial consultation with Dr Berg, a dermatologic surgeon, will include a treatment plan as well as a discussion of risks and benefits.  Much of the hair in the treated area will stop growing for weeks after any individual treatment and with further treatments, much of these results become permanent.

What preparation is needed before a treatment?
You should limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for six weeks prior to treatment (shaving or bleaching are ok). The laser targets hair roots which are removed temporarily by waxing or plucking. Sun exposure should be avoided four to six weeks prior to and following treatment. Sun exposure decreases effectiveness and increases complications of laser treatment.

How much does it cost?
The cost of treatment varies depending on the area being treated and the size of the area being treated.  Cost estimates are available by calling 206-598-6647 .

What will happen to the area after treatment?
In most cases, reaction to laser is relatively short lived redness and mild swelling.  The treated area will feel like a sunburn for a few hours after treatment.  Application of ice or taking Tylenol during the first few hours may reduce the discomfort.

How can i make an appointment?
You can make an appointment for a consultation by calling 206-598-6647.
