Laser Tattoo Removal

For hundreds of years, decorative tattoos have been used and the wish to remove them has probably existed just as long.

In the past, attempts to remove tattoos have sometimes had undesirable effects, often leaving behind scars in place of the tattoo.
Modern lasers allow us to remove many tattoo inks with minimal risk of scarring.  The Q-switche Nd-Yag laser, used at the UW dermatologic surgery clinic uses light energy to remove tattoo ink.  The tattoo ink destructs as a result of the rapid absorption of light energy and is then removed by the body’s filtering systems.

At our clinic we believe that the best results come from treatment performed by well-trained specialist physicians and nurses.  We also believe in having an experienced dermatologist create an individual treatment plan.  This allows you to have a clear picture of expected results, risks and costs.  Dr Berg, the director of dermatologic surgery, will see you personally at your consultation and is always on-site at all of your treatment sessions.

FAQs

Will this work for all colors of ink?
No – blue, black and red inks respond the best. Oranges and purples usually respond well while green and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove.

How many sessions does it take?
Several treatments are typically required for best results.  The number of treatments depends on the amount and type of ink used for your tattoo and the depth of the ink in the skin.  You will have an excellent idea of expected results after your individual consultation with Dr Berg.  Sessions are typically spaced at least 6-8 weeks apart.

Will my tattoo disappear?
In many cases laser treatment results in greater than 90-95% fading of the tattoo.  However, over 100 tattoo inks are used throughout the world today, none of which are regulated by the FDA.  Because of the lack of regulation it is impossible to predict the exact outcome of the removal of any given tattoo.  Dr Berg will discuss your expected results at your individual consultation.

Will I feel any pain?
The laser can be uncomfortable without any anesthesia, especially for larger tattoos.  We typically perform the treatments with a topical (cream) anesthesia applied prior to treatment. With this, most patients find the treatments very tolerable.

What will I need after treatment?
Typically an antibacterial ointment and a dressing will be applied to the treated area for a few days after treatment.

How much does it cost?
Cost depends on the size of the area to be treated.   At your consultation you will be able to have an excellent idea of the cost of a treatment plan or session.

Will my insurance pay?
Medical insurance does not cover the treatment of decorative tattoos for cosmetic purposes.
